074: Masayoshi Fujita - Our Mother's Lights (ft. Moor Mother)
The Japanese vibraphonist and marimba player Masayoshi Fujita has shared two new singles from a brand new and forthcoming album via the Erased Tapes label (Nils Frahm, Olafur Arnalds), which is called Migratory and arrives in the first week of September.
Of the two new songs, 'Valley' is a meandering, meditative soundscape, all heavy drifting fog in the quiet of a morning, and as captivating as that sounds. 'Our Mother's Light' is a subtly different beast, however, the gentleness of the composition taken to wholly new pastures thanks to the wonderful words and voice of Moor Mother - the poet, musician, and activist from Philadelphia.
Draping eloquent lines on top of Fujita's tender and fascinating soundscape makes for something beautifully enticing, like suddenly finding yourself awake in a dream. "I didn’t intend to add any vocals to 'Our Mother’s Lights'. But through some lovely encounters with Camae (Moor Mother), it just happened," Masayoshi says of the collab. "And I'm glad that it did, because her voice and lyrics are so powerful and fit with the image of the song very well. She has just brought this song to another level."
The new album was made when Fujita returned to his native Japan with his wife and their three children, after 13 years of living in Berlin. Fulfilling his life-long dream of living and composing music in the midst of nature, the family found their new home in the mountain hills along the coast of Kami-cho, Hyōgo.
