One of our favourite burgeoning UK labels, Hand In Hive have a strong but tender identity, releasing great albums from the likes of Dama Scout, Wyldest, AO Gerber, Jemima Coulter and more since their 2016 launch. Having recently taken a short sabbatical, the label return this week with their first release in a year, courtesy of an exquisite new song from LA songwriter Gracie Gray.
The 'Burden' single is lifted from a brand new album, Magnet, which is released July 26th, and was conceived over the course of three years, and digs into "the magnetic pull that brings people together, offering a profound reflection on human nature."
"Making this album was incredibly challenging and rewarding at the same time.. I feel like these songs showed and continue to show me parts of myself I couldn't get to any other way."
Immediately compelling, the new song simmers with a dull ache, a profound desire to put things right in a world that's getting away from you. Gray's voice remains a thing of subtle wonder, winding itself around a layered instrumental that sets the perfect backdrop for such emotive sentiments.
The result is a straightforward ballad, that carries a greater weight thanks to just how much you believe in Gray as she sings. Like an intimate secret shared, she casts a spell that reduces the room, the day, down to just you and her; a rare kind of sorcery indeed.
With eyes closed looking up, images painted slowly float by while listening to “Burden.” This new single asks questions that have been waiting to be heard: is there any more safety to be felt in our lives once we are born? Is there any day that you would once again be held, enveloped in unconditional love, without feeling like a burden?
