No strangers to guest appearances, having collaborated with Julien Baker, J Mascis, and more over the past few years, the excellent Wild Pink turn providers here, guesting on a beautiful new song from nêhiyaw songwriter Wyatt C. Louis. Based in Moh'kinstsís, Treaty 7 Territory, in Calgary, Alberta, Wyatt is a gifted storyteller, shaping familiar sentiments into something poignant and soothingly familiar.
A further track released from the forthcoming debut album on Toronto's excellent Royal Mountain Records, 'Oh Vibrant Sky' is, like the majority of Wyatt's work, both sincerely written and earnestly delivered; the summer hues of its world as much a part of the song's magic as its more tangible aspects: the gentle playing, that soothing lead voice.
With our backs against a vibrant sky, you will see me in a new light.
The presence of Wild Pink's John Ross is deftly handled in the track's final form, Ross gently imbuing the mood with a romantic and affecting grain – the piece coming together after Wyatt and John "shared ideas, textures, and lyrics over a series of months during 2023."
Both sweet and memorable, 'Oh Vibrant Sky' is a gem of unhurried restraint, a yearning summer ballad that casts the world in a peach-glow of fading daylight, a lingering sense of tenderness forged through intimate connection.
