183: Coral Grief - Mutual Wish

Seattle's Coral Grief have just released their debut album, Air Between Us, an absorbing collection of twelve songs that simmer and break; that occasionally shrink, before coming alive once more in a shimmer of shoegaze noise.

Led by Lena FM's spiralling voice, the trio – which also features Sam Fason and Cam Hancock – bring together guitars, synth, organ, samples and percussion to create a woozy blend of changing colours and temperature that flits between indie rock, dream pop, and shoegaze.

In its fiercest moments, the album is propulsive and full of life, presented in the form of a headrush, slightly dizzy and sweet. They aren't tied to that mood, however, the tone is likely to shift and fold in on itself to present something more subdued, an intangible feeling that quietly tugs at your chest.

'Mutual Wish' is one such moment, a near five-minute that bundles up all of Coral Grief's varying roots and bundles them together into one captivating, often glorious spread of sound, always underpinned by a restless energy, an unshakeable desire to run and run.

The whole thing is excellent. Check out 'Mutual Wish' below but be sure to dive into the full record, to get lost in the giddy world they've so compellingly built.
