Most things written about Sam Sodomsky tend to lead with the note that over the course of his career he's written and released over thirty LPs, and while, yes, I'm doing that here as I type out these words, it's only to quickly say that such context immediately dissipates and the first song from his brand new album stirs into quietly life.
Announced for a February release, under his usual The Bird Calls moniker, Melody Trail is coming via the excellent Ruination Records, and 'Ordinary Silence', it's welcoming sound, is a gorgeous snapshot of Sodomsky's subtle magic, a deft three-minute folk-pop gem that burrows, and burrows; a half-formed memory of a memory.
There are echoes of Kevin Devine's more stripped-back moments, the gentle weaving of melody, the story-like nature of the lyrics. There's even a drifting harmonica, a little gust of metallic breath that carries the song to new places, casts new shadows.
So you change the color of your hair
So you change the way you frame the last ten years
Through a crack in the doorway
See the shape of the coming day
It’s a glowing underline
It’s just a sliver of the sky...
...Sodomsky sings, that golden hum of a voice carrying the cold of the season, the weight of time rolling on regardless.
