Announcing their return with the title track to their sixth studio album, SUUNS break through the weather to offer something glistening and autumnal, a shock out of season. Their first release in three years, the Montreal band will release The Breaks on September 9th, via the excellent Joyful Noise label (Deerhoof, Marnie Stern, et al).
A somewhat mellow four-minutes-or-so, 'The Breaks' is a gloriously muddy return, a nightly walk through a landscape that seems to shift in your periphery, in the shadows around you. The drum beats are sparse but unwieldy, adding to the dense atmosphere, while the vocals are equally listless, twisted into shape or perhaps just folding under the weight.
Flickering away under it all are short glimpses of colourful, sometimes exuberant synths, and their fading in and out of focus shifts the whole thing once more, perhaps a further glimpse into the what the rest of the album holds, or just a momentary escape from the nightly quality that prevails.
Regardless, it's a captivating return, a subtle but beautifully assured reminder of the bands signature craft. Sink into it.
The Breaks is released September 6th and available to pre-order via Joyful Noise
