140: Satomimagae - Many

If 'Many', the new single from Satomimagae, feels like a snapshot it's because it is. One of fifteen pieces that make up her new and forthcoming album, 'Many', the like the album as a whole, "unfolds as a series of vignettes that document both the personal and the universal, seen and unseen."

Based on, and inspired by, observations she made of life as it flowed past her studio window, Taba finds the Japanese artist "leaving linear songwriting to rest for circuitous stories expanded and expansive in tone and texture".

Regardless of its fleeting, ambiguous nature, 'Many' is incredibly pretty, a half-lit room in the half-light of dusk, it feels indicative of the work that's come before, a Grouper-esque haze of murky instrumentation and fragmented vocals that bend and blend into each other.

The deft, delicate nature of the song is utterly captivating, Satomi weaving a spell that never really takes shape but instead lingers, caught in the ether, dust motes twirling silently in a fading light.
