174: Runnner - Get Real Sleep

Seemingly making a big leap forward from what's come before, Noah Weinman has announced a brand new Runnner album with the sharing of new track 'Get Real Sleep'. Where much of his previous work has felt tender and stripped-back, the new single opens up a whole new landscape, a driving slice of indie-rock, driven by fire.
Titled A Welcome Kind of Weakness, the new album is made up of eleven new songs and is set for release at the end of August, via the ever-excellent Run For Cover Records. It's also his first studio-recorded album, a fact that's delivered with earnest clarity on the new single.
"I first started writing this song years ago, I was thinking a lot about 'real sleep.' We say it all the time and it’s funny to me that there’s this concept of actual sleep vs bad sleep. Sonically I wanted it to be sort of hypnotic but also a bit frantic. Like the push/pull of actively trying to sleep.”
On 'Get Real Sleep', this sonic shift feels focussed and unforced, a kind of natural ramping up of all that's come before. Weinman's voice continues to carry a palpable sense of tender weariness, and it's still given plenty of space to breathe and emote, despite the heightened fullness of what surrounds.
He remains, then, a wholesome and engaging singer-songwriter, something of a throwback perhaps, but with eyes firmly fixed on what lies beyond.
