166: Rachel Kitchlew - Mammone

Titled, aptly, Flirty Ghost, the new album from harpist Rachel Kitchlew drifts between playfulness and something altogether fascinating, a space where shadowy ambient explorations eventually crack to reveal the bright and colours below. Released in August, three of its eight songs have been revealed thus far, all of which lean into this narrative: one a sub two minute reprise, the other a shimmering, brightly cinematic six-minutes.

The mid-point between these two outliers sits album opener 'Mammone', a fascinating instrumental - sultry and airy - that guides listeners in with an excited, purposeful palm. The album was said to be "crafted in a spontaneous, deeply personal atmosphere, recorded late at night in the cozy, smoky setting of London's SFJ studio" and that vibe runs right through the hear of 'Mammone'; a hushed glow, a ripple of something unearthly, an alluring atmosphere that beautifully sets the scene.

Flirty Ghost is released in early August and features Hot Chip's Alexis Taylor on a couple of tracks alongside a small group of fellow collaborators all of whom add Wurlitzer, trumpet, percussion and more. Check it out below and drift off somewhere else entirely.
