152: quickly, quickly - Take It From Me

It doesn't matter much in the grand scheme of things, I guess, but it's always impressive to see a "Written, recorded, performed, produced, and mixed by..." note on the bottom of a Bandcamp page. Especially when the associated songs sound as beautifully (complex, weightless) as they do on this forthcoming new record from Graham Jonson.

Released under his quickly, quickly moniker, and with the full album stepping out into the light this coming Friday, each of the LP's three singles feel unique and uniquely part of something bigger, each a detailed layer of a bigger, more sumptuous piece of fruit.

Jonson, who hails from Portland, Oregon, works out of his basement studio, released his debut in '21, an EP in '23, and also produced for the likes of Moses Sumney in the time since. He cites both Phil Elverum (The Microphones, Mount Eerie) and Dijon (to be found on the new Bon Iver record) as influences and they make for good beacons when surmising his work; playful, full of soul, and occasionally, thrillingly, bent right out shape.

You can dig into 3 of the LP's songs over on Bandcamp already, and it's 'Take It From Me' that cherry-picked itself on first few listens – a stripped-back, exquisitely produced, light-as-a-feather strum that lets just enough shade in to prickle the senses, to grab your attention with all its subtle gleaming.

There's more weight elsewhere, a little more furrow, a denser wash; spread out across all 11 of its songs and I Heard That Noise could hold something very special indeed. It's out Friday via the excellent Ghostly label, add it to your listening pile.
