We're only a couple of months into the life of Pina Pilau's rather brilliant Get A Dog LP - one of our favourites of the year so far, and one we included on our recent subscriber mix.
Recorded in a burst of (un)inspiration, Modern Home is a brand new standalone song from Zurich-based songwriter, and is every bit as enticing as those couple hand-full of songs we're still learning the shape of.
After years of living in the charming chaos of an old apartment share, suddenly moving into a freshly renovated flat is quite a shift, isn't it? Pina Palau found herself in such an uninspired environment at first. However, guided by Adrianne Lenker's motto - "We could frame (just about) anything and it would seem quite significant" - she transformed the silence into music. "Modern Home" was born: two chords and one single take in the studio. Lightness and carefreeness characterize the song consistently, as it was initially conceived as a joke, even a quick shot. These qualities have made it a favorite of Pina Palau, all in the name of the magic of the moment. Additionally, it carries the message of "keep going when it's most beautiful."
Just as Get A Dog bristled with infectious energy, so too does 'Model Home', Palau's voice a thing of gnarly brilliance, just as captivating in its withdrawn moments of quietude as it is when it lets itself loose amid the bluster of instrumentation.
An excellent addition, to an already-excellent 2024; dig in below.
