049: Peel Dream Magazine - Lie In The Gutter

There's a woozy lightness of touch that runs throughout the new song from Peel Dream Magazine that calls to mind the song's predicament: lying in the gutter, so often the best way to view the stars.

Released alongside the news that the band's fourth album, Rose Main Reading Room, will be released in early September via the excellent Topshelf Records, the song has a dreamlike quality to it that feels feathery but significant, often in the same sweeping moment.

Making good on the often-used comparisons with both Stereolab and Yo La Tengo, the band continue to impress their own significance thanks to the synergy of the playing and the gleaming quality of Joseph Stevens song-writing.

Such sentiments are highlighted beautifully here, with 'Lie In The Gutter' seeming to shift shape each time you glance its way, each time you dig into it, like the light is catching it at different angles, revealing new depths and sensibilities.

Set to the backdrop of New York City and its towering landmarks – The American Museum of Natural History, Grand Central Station, and the like – songwriter Joseph Stevens weaves personal stories into the wider fabric of the natural world, touching on themes of instinct, animality, and evolution.
