080: Otis Shanty - Why Do I Care?
More than ever I've been feeling wildly grateful for those DIY bands, labels, publicists, and writers that make up the mulch-y and messy but utterly essential base level of this funny old industry. I'm not sure if it's just me getting wistfully nostalgic in my old age, or how hard it's been to cut through so much noise with this new 3/6/5 project, to reach all those people who were once to eager and easy to reach. Maybe it's the seemingly endless cuts to the arts here and further away, the incessant devaluation of something so indispensable and so vital to my life and yours.
All of which is to say, I'm very grateful for labels like Relief Map who continue to platform and cheer on bands like Otis Shanty, allowing their sounds and sentiments to reach ears like mine, from so far away.
Brightly bursting out of Boston, having relocated from Somerville, Massachusetts, the quartet will release a brand new LP towards the end of September, and the first taste of it arrives this week with the restless and edgy 'Why Do I Care?'.
A sumptuous burst of jangly indie-rock, it marries noisy slackerisms with something altogether more fixed and fierce; a darkness rippling just beneath the surface, a shadow that shouldn't be there. It's a vibrant, infectious introduction to the forthcoming Up On The Hill LP – which is up for pre-order now over on their Bandcamp page.
Embrace sincerity and support the things you love. It's getting harder every day.
