OK Cool - Safety Car

It's been a long time coming, but having been kicking around the scruffy edges of the Chicago DIY scene, and releasing three EPs, over the past five years, OK Cool are finally set to release their debut full-length. Called Chit Chat, and released on August 1, the album finds the duo of Bridget Stiebris and Haley Blomquist Waller allowing themselves to take up space; adding a bit more depth and heft to their signature sound.
There's still plenty of playfulness at the heart of their new work, of course, and new single 'Safety Car' feels indicative of that, a gloriously scuzzy and unkempt track that digs its nails in and barely lets up. The vocals are delivered with a sense of urgency but they never lack heart, and while the twinkling synth lines bring a little hint of sunlight they're soon swept aside for the thick, fuzzy guitar wig-out that sits at the song's core.
"This song is about the people in your life that make you feel loved and grounded. I wrote it last year with my husband in mind while we were starting to plan our wedding," Blomquist Waller says of the new track. "There are references in the lyrics to things we do together that I know, in the future, I will look back on as peaceful vignettes. It’s about feeling nostalgic and grateful for things as they’re happening."
Restlessly compelling, often a little romantic, and always packed full of swagger, it's a pertinent reminder of the band's endearing craft ahead of the long-awaited debut. Listen to it via the excellent accompanying video below.
