113: Nadia Reid - Hotel Santa Cruz
Nadia Reid's music holds such a special place in the soundtrack of my life, her 2017 Preservation LP arriving in just the right form and feel to become inextricably bound to a strange and difficult and formative year.
Her voice has that ability, a kind of gripping nature, a delicate touch but one that never threatens to drop you. She's been away for a while now, since 2020's Out Of My Province LP, becoming a mother and relocating to the UK in the time between, but she also recently unveiled news of a brand new LP, Enter Now Brightness which will bring its own kind of light to the early parts of next year.
Unveiled today, new single 'Hotel Santa Cruz' is rich and vibrant, a straight-up burst of indie-rock that lands a little harder thanks to that aforementioned voice that holds a melancholy even when the world around it seems bursting with promise.
“I wrote this in Tenerife and it turned out to be quite hooky." Nadia says of the track. "It’s just a series of questions. I feel quite moved at the end, with the line ‘You are everything I’d like to be’. I always give myself goosebumps when I perform that line. But I’m not sure who I’m referring to."
Dig in below. The album is up on Bandcamp for pre-order and she tours across Europe in early March, with a good chunk of UK shows. Find out more here.
