It's always a sincere joy when Orindal Records announce a new release; the label having previously ushered records from Gia Margaret, Julie Byrne, Karima Walker, Claire Cronin and so many others into the world over the past few years.
Today it's the turn of Moontype, a jaunty folk-rock band led by Margaret McCarthy, who have joined the label to share their first new music since their 2021 debut LP, and a precursor to something more formidable to arrive further into 2025.
The band have expanded into a fully-fledged four-piece since the release of their Bodies of Water LP, and McCarthy also hollowed out some time for herself along the way. “I have gotten better at being alone, and found ways to feel strong and powerful in myself,” she says of the time between then and now. “I'm better at having the relationships I want to have and setting the boundaries I want to set. For this record, I didn't shy away from dark or hard things, like loneliness, sadness, anger, and disconnection.”
New single Long Country feels indicative of all those many emotional facets she cites, offering something that can feel sweeping and sentimental before diving headfirst into far more angsty, a red-cheeked gulp of life, full of thick fiery guitars and thudding drums. The results are wonderful, full of chunky hooks to bring you in and full of a fiery rebellion that spits you back out the other side, only wanting more, more.
You'll have to wait another wee while yet, content with the feeling that it's just oh so good to have them back. Listen to the new song below.
"I wrote Long Country during the early pandemic but it’s a feeling I’ve had many times, feeling trapped in who and where I am. I want to escape, drive far away, but wherever you go there you are. Sometimes it feels impossible to change the emotional patterns you’ve built for yourself. This is the only song where all four of us sing at the same time, and that’s always a special moment."
