045: Molly Nilsson - Excalibur
For what I think is (if my maths is correct) her eleventh LP, Molly Nilsson has moved away from her signature black-and-white album cover to break out in technicolour on Un-American Activities, her just-announced brand new album.
Set for release in just few weeks time, the new album will be available July 7th via Dark Skies Association and the ever-excellent Glasgow label Night School Records (order it here) and is preceded by lead single 'Excalibur' which beautifully sets up the 10 song collection.
As gloriously giddy as we've come to expect, the track is a bubbling, light-headed burst of synth-pop, carried along the crest of some sad summer wave by the energetic flush of its production. All propulsive percussion and spiralling sweet sounds, the track is archetypal in its overall mood while still delivered with the kind of heady vigour that allows everything she touches to feel unmissable.
Just otherworldly enough to pull you out of this one, and just spirited enough to keep you focused on its beating heart, it's a timely reminder of Nilsson's craft and the prelude to one of this summer's essential soundtracks.
