048: MJ Lenderman - She's Leaving You
In the three years or so since we premiered MJ Lenderman's short-n-weird ballad 'Someone Get The Grill Out Of The Rain' on the old GFP blog, MJ Lenderman has found cult-like success with his band Wednesday, as well as garnering critical praise for his wonderful 2022 LP, Boat Songs and then playing a prominent role in Waxahatchee's latest album Tigers Blood.
Looking back, those heights were keenly visible. The aforementioned song was only one-minute-and-thirteen seconds long but it held something magic in its bones; a singular blend of peculiarity and heavy-chested melancholy. He pushed those facets of his work in various ways on Boat Songs, sometimes leaning into something altogether heavier and gnarly, but occasionally finding the same sense of quiet contemplation, such as on 'TLC Cage Match' which remains one of my favourite songs of all time.
Excellent news then that Lenderman returns later this year with Manning Fireworks, a brand new album released September 6th via his new of ANTI-. Following swiftly on from the sprightly 'Rudolph', the album is officially introduced with new song 'She's Leaving You'.
Somewhat more faded than its predecessor, the song is four-and-a-half minutes of Jake's typically scorched voice, sharp lyrics, and thick hook-y melodic slabs that dig their way under your skin with every single passing listen.
It falls apart
We all got work to do
It gets dark
We all got work to do
Brash as it might sound, there's few doing it better right now - and 'She's Leaving You' is further proof of that. Dig right in.
