055: Merce Lemon - Backyard Lover
It's been nearly four years since Merce Lemon released the excellent Moonth album but the Pittsburgh songwriter is finally back with news of its full-length follow-up with the release of 'Backyard Lover' and word that the Watch Me Drive Them Dogs Wild LP will be released this September.
A simmering and somewhat epic first-step, 'Backyard Lover' is a timely and wholehearted reminder of such anticipation, five-and-a-half-minutes of folky Americana that gently builds to a rugged and resounding finale that carries the track to unexpectedly vigorous heights.
A tender passage on the lingering affects of loss and grief, Merce fills the empty spaces first with weighty reflection and then ties those to sound and movement in a tailspin of connection, found and broken.
“So many of my songs are touched by and explore death, specifically in relation to the loss I experienced of my best friend when I was fifteen years old” Merce says of the forthcoming album. “That loss has forever changed me and who I am in my relationships to lovers, friends, family."
Digging into such sentiments makes for a staunch and emotive journey, and one that reveals new layers with each listen; like a garden growing, like the seasons shifting. A wonderful return.
