046: Kevin Fowley – Aux Marches Du Palais
Kevin Fowley sings 15th century French lullabies
One of my favourite things about seeking out music is being caught completely by surprise. Was I looking for a Franco-Irish folk artist singing 15th century French lullabies? Of course not! Did I ever think my life was missing a Franco-Irish folk artist singing 15th century French lullabies? Also, definitely, no. But here we are regardless - and it sounds incredible.
Taken from a forthcoming album on the brilliant Basin Rock label from the north of England, Kevin Fowley's À Feu Doux is 25-minutes of music, spread across just four songs but it's wonderful in oh so many ways, both surprising and familiar.
Kevin grew up between France and Ireland, and therefore found himself listening to his mother sing French lullabies in one room, as his father played old Irish songs on the fiddle in another. The eventual end-point of that journey is this strange and remarkable record - from which a brand new song is released into the world today.
Beautifully considered, never striving to be something it's not 'Aux Marches Du Palais' is five-and-a-half minutes of absorbing contemplation, Fowley's voice an unhurried and murky delight, sitting just above the equally careful playing that underlies throughout.
If there's a time and a place for everything, then carve out a quiet nook in your evening to sit and watch the video for this; it'll transport you somewhere else entirely. You might have had no idea that you needed it at all - but I promise you that you absolutely do.
The album is released in July. Pre-order via Brandcamp.
