087: Kate Bollinger - Sweet Devil
“When I’m recording a song, my indication of whether it’s worth pursuing is if I’m seeing a movie in my head to go along with it," Kate Bollinger has said, ahead of her full-length debut, which arrives at the end of September via Ghostly.
Such sentiments are nudged to the foreground on new single 'Sweet Devil', an alluring new song that arrives inside a video which does indeed feel perfectly cinematic; a mysterious black-and-white gem pulled from some dusty archive, long forgotten. It's a mesmerising combination, the strange scattered images woven together by a playful composition that only adds to the sense of skewed melodrama.
The track is pulled from the Songs From A Thousand Frames Of Mind LP, a follow-up to Bollinger's 2022 EP, and a record that's described as "a collage-like vision that’s instantly memorable and uniquely mystifying. Ranging from homespun folk songs to warmly rendered psychedelic rock—like early Rolling Stones as fronted by Hope Sandoval."
A number of the songs on the new record were co-written with the formidable, and equally unique, songwriter Matthew E. White, while the whole thing was pulled together in upstate New York with producer Sam Evian, who continues to put his name and talent to some of the best long-players in the indie rock landscape, following work with the likes of Big Thief, Blonde Redhead, Cass McCombs among countless others.
I’m the sweet devil
I can let you free to hate me forever
I’m just the sweet devil
I’ll leave but you know I care
I’ve cried a thousand times for you
Now I’m done
And you say I’m cold
We’ve died a thousand times in my mind
So I’m done
Mourning you and me
Sweet devil
I can let you free to hate me forever
I’m just the sweet devil
