070: Andrew Wasylyk & Tommy Perman - Be The Hammer (Ft. Aidan Moffat)
Gently shimmering away in the distant corners of summer, the excellently-titled Ash Grey And The Gull Glides On is the forthcoming album from Scottish multi-instrument wizard Andrew Wasylyk and the artist, designer, and musician Tommy Perman. Through the small handful of songs released thus far, the album, which is released at the tail-end of August, has revealed many captivating elements of its creation: from Perman's "ambient-acid-house grooves" to "multi-textural percussion built from sampling the knocks, clangs and creaks of Wasylyk’s upright piano."
New single 'Be The Hammer' adds another colour to that captivating mix, inviting in the beguiling Scots drawl of Arab Strap's Aidan Moffat who beautifully shapes the track with that signature voice, accentuating a sharper edge to the project that has only rippled under the surface thus far.
Released this week, the new track is suitably defiant, Aidan's rain-soaked delivery, the spiralling nature of the whole piece, like a somewhat weary call-to-arms. "We're not your judge and jury, all we ask is where's your fury?" he sings, amid a half-buried synth-line and Wasylyk's poignant repeated piano; sentiments thrown at the weather, like a night slowly folding into itself.
