112: Joni - Avalanches
You only need to look at the two labels that have joined forces to welcome new music from Joni into the world, to capture a sense of the warm resonance, emotive care that ripples through her music. A brand new song released today, 'Avalanches' comes ribbon-bowed by the news that Joni has signed with the truly excellent labels Hand In Hive and Keeled Scales (North America).
A bubbling, playful song, Joni cites both Sparklehorse and Feist as influences and 'Avalanches' finds an absorbing meeting point between them; a sound that is both wistful and romantic but holding something just out of reach, a figure in the shadows, perhaps, or perhaps just a shadow.
Joni – American born, London based – has already supported the likes of Laura Veirs, Aqualung, Dan Croll, Old Sea Brigade, and Luke Sital Singh – the latter of which Joni worked with on the new single. So she's no wide-eyed newcomer, but this is indeed a new chapter, and it sings beautifully under such circumstances; humming a tune of love lost and life healing, a turning of the mulch.
