168: Iona Zajac - Bang

The majority of Iona Zajac's music has thus far leant into folkier, traditional side of things, most notably on her excellent debut EP Find Her In The Grass and again on 'Summer', a beautiful song released earlier this year.

Now, fresh from touring as a member of The Pogues alongside Lankum’s Daragh Lynch, John Francis Flynn, Lisa O’Neill, and Nadine Shah, she takes a big and purposeful stride into fresh territory on 'Bang', a brand new standalone single released this week.

From the outset, through its wobbly guitar line and rising temperature, the track reframes Zajac's scope and sees her leaning into bolder, far more colourful terrain. It's no surprise to learn that Zajac sees the song as a moment of liberation; the whole thing feels driven by something once buried trying to fight its way out - or perhaps the celebration of such an unshackling.

Regardless, it makes for something both joyous and joyfully compelling, a whetting of the appetite for whatever might follow. Check it out via its excellent accompanying video below.
