094: Hildegard - Cruel

Hildegard's debut collection was crafted in just eight days, the release capturing the sparking, sparkling energy that emerged in Montreal between singer-songwriter Helena Deland and the more electronic-focused Ouri.

Jour 1596, the pairs forthcoming LP, grew from very different roots, tenderly cared for and gently brought to life over 1596 days, pieced together during retreats the pair took together in the quiet isolation of rural Québec.

Announced this week, Jour 1596 is out in full in October 18th and is preceded by the alluring, seductive lead track 'Cruel'. Beautifully soulful, the track leads with a rolling bassline and muffled beats. Mirroring the late-night pace of the instrumental, the soft vocals are equally serene, and no less compelling for it.

It's said that the creation of the record led to a the kind of journey that was "at times formidable" but soon "became a celebration of the limitless joy and deep friendship between Ouri and Helena." That connection, the limitless bonds found in artistic expression, ripples throughout 'Cruel' and it makes for something that feels both introspective but also wonderfully assured of itself, of the mood that pervades and lingers; flecks of dust caught in a beam of spotlight.
