108: Helen Ganya - Share Your Care
As Dog In The Snow, Helen Ganya released some beautiful music from her Brighton home, the Scottish-Thai songwriter finding endlessly evocative ways of marrying sound and sentiment. In 2022 she released the polish the machine LP under her own name and via the Bella Union label, but was in fact already working on its follow-up.
Around this time Ganya’s grandmother passed away, a significant loss for reasons both literal and figurative. Her last remaining grandparent, Ganya also saw the links to the Thai side of her heritage "disintegrating".
Ganya grew up in Singapore, but spent her summers in the northeast of Thailand where her mum’s side of the family is from, visiting her grandmother. Where would all those memories go now that the person at the centre of them was gone? What was her relationship to this place without that glue?
The result of her exploration of those questions is found on new album, Share Your Care – the title-track from which is streaming below to herald the album's announcement. “I got my diary and wrote every single memory of my time as a child in Thailand, spending time with her, my grandad, my aunts and cousins and everything,” Ganya says of its origins. “I had these snapshots of memories that I just wrote down because I just suddenly panicked: it was like, who am I, then?”
Musically rich and vibrant, 'Share Your Care' fizzes with sound and colour, dense sonic landscapes inhabited by Ganya's hazy vocals, expressive imagery and even traditional Thai instrumentation that weaves its way into the mix. It's an arresting return from a special artist; and you can check it out via the song's expressive accompanying video (directed by Am Picha) below.
Share Your Care is out Feb 7th, via Bella Union; pre-order here
