165: Hand Habits - Wheel Of Change

Though it's been four years since the release of Hand Habits Fun House LP - their last full-length studio effort - Meg Duffy has remained something of a constant, releasing outtakes, B-sides, live recordings, a new EP, all while appearing on work from the likes of Perfume Genius and Matt Berninger's new LP among many other guest spots and collaborations.

Finally though the spotlight will fall back on their own considered and always beautifully engaging studio work with the release of new album Blue Reminder; a 12 song collection on the Fat Possum label. Pitched as walking an "emotional tightrope between hope and a kind of quiet anxiety", Duffy says a lot of the songs are about falling in love but chronicle the myriad ways those feelings can manifest, the "terrifying and the exciting".

Featuring guest turns from Blake Mills alongside recent collaborator Gregory Uhlmann, the new album also (intriguingly) features electronic musicians Daniel Aged, and SML’s Josh Johnson and Anna Butterss.

Released today in way of an introduction to their new work, 'Wheel Of Change' is vivid and punchy, Meg's voice is a subtle, somewhat simmering beast, merging into the fleshed-out backdrop of spiky guitars and swirling instrumentation. An intriguingly pitched return, the second half of the song soon wanders away from the path laid by the opening couple of minutes, the whole thing seemingly folding in on itself as it drifts towards a more spacious and fractured end, never quite able to get enough of a grip to come bursting back to life.

The song comes coupled with an excellent new video that brings the simmering melodrama beautifully to life. Check it out below right now.
