052: Georgia Gets By - Madeline
You might remember Broods, a sister/brother duo from New Zealand who released three albums between 2014 and 2019 via Capitol and Polydor Records. Their work was especially highly regarded on home shores, and saw the band support the likes of Taylor Swift, Haim, Tove Lo and more.
If such names feel a little outside of our wheelhouse then the solo-project of Broods' Georgia Nott will make much sense. Launched last year, her solo work goes under the name of Georgia Gets By, and deals in elegant and exquisite electronic-tinged balladry - as highlighted beautifully on new single 'Madeline'.
There's not too much context here: the track is released via Luminelle Recordings and arrives with an equally arresting video companion courtesy of Silken Weinberg:
I made the video for “Madeline” with Silken Weinberg; my favorite person to create visual worlds with, for her ability to capture drama in a way that is equally playful and devastating. We were watching a bunch of Hitchcock movies and became especially obsessed with Spellbound. Inspired by the trailers for his films, and the way they are a window into a much bigger story, we wanted to make ‘Madeline’ into that window. Just a glimpse of a world where ‘Madeline’ could be anything from a ghost, an idea or a hallucination. It’s really up to the viewer.
What I should add, however, is that 'Madeline' is stop-you-in-your-tracks pretty, the kind of song that shrinks the day, the room around you, down to a speck of cryptic and alluring light; a whole world upon a mote of dust.
