065: Fionn Regan - HEADPHONES
Fionn Regan is one of those songwriters that I'll always have time for. We're creeping towards 20 years since the release of his all-timer of a debut album The End of History (released 2006) and while nothing since has quite grabbed me in the same way, he continues to release interesting, uniquely-shaped songs that peddle that shadowy space between a dream world and reality.
New single 'HEADPHONES' was released this week alongside news of a brand new album, O Avalanche, will be released this coming November. His first LP since 2019's Cala, the album was written in Mallorca – the sunny disposition of which shapes a number of the tracks – and even features a singing cameo from Anna Friel, who adds vocals the album's title-track.
With gentle guitar and a swirling ambience, the new single feels both singular and carried by a wave of nostalgia, Fionn's deeply reverbed voice like some strange mood hanging over the whole thing, a series of unexpected dark clouds on an otherwise perfect day, before the sunlight returns for a more buoyant final flourish.
“It’s like you’re looking into this world where there’s a depth of field, it’s summer, and you’re floating into and out of it. The songs can come together in the moment, so it’s not a conscious thing, but when I listen to the record it feels like there’s an eternal optimism about it – a kind of upward-feeling energy.”
