042: Fashion Club - Rotten Mind (feat. Julie Byrne)
I wasn't aware of the music of Fashion Club until this new collaboration with Julie Byrne drifted in front of me, a swollen cloud of gloopy greying sound and textures. Fashion Club, it turns out, is Pascal Stevenson, who played in Moaning as well as the likes of Girlpool, SASAMI, and Cherry Glazerr before releasing a bristling and goth-y art-rock record back in 2022.
Released as a one-off single with little context, 'Rotten Mind' covers similarly moody ground, albeit with a kind of hollowed-out sound, a kind of darkness you can't make sense of, like the unexpected arrival of dusk. The production casts the track in monochrome, diluted of colour with Stevenson's vocals heavy and captivatingly unlighted, while Julie Byrne flickers in the background, often unseen, a decadent and gripping shadow throughout.
