111: Clara Mann - 'Til I Come Around
There are songs and voices that captivate you with surprise, and there are songs and voices that hold you in their grip for doing exactly what you expect, exactly what you need them to do.
When Clara Mann's 'Til I Come Around begins, you hope for a kick of the drum, and in it comes, you hope for a sprinkle of piano, and there it is, dusty and unhurried. You hope the voice never leaves your side, and it doesn't. This pattern doesn't make it predictable, doesn't make it unimaginative, what it does do is draw you immediately into its weary-heart; a dull light through the fog.
The first of two songs to be released from Clara's forthcoming album, not released until early March of 2025, 'Til I Come Around is joined by Stadiums – an equally compelling, suitably moving counterpart. The recordings are sparse but earthy, so close you can hear her mouth move, her lips purse, her throat catch.
It's a stunning voice, one that feels almost unbelievable in the shape it takes, in the way it can wrap its presence around you, like a ghost creeping behind. Both songs make for a truly exquisite, spellbinding introduction to Mann's new body of work – and it really can't come soon enough.
