101: Caroline Says - Always Looking Back
The cover of the new Caroline Says LP, released just last week, features Caroline Sallee caught in a double-exposure, the same face facing the same way but double-tracked, side by side with herself.
On 'Always Looking Back', the album's centre-point and most compelling moment, both of these characters are present, Sallee's voice front and centre but also layered behind, drifting in and out of the shadows, whispery and ghost-like.
The Lucky One is Sallee's first full-length effort in a whole six years, since the release of the No Fool Like An Old Fool, a record we championed on GFP a lot at the time and remains something timeless and full of mystery. At first glance, The Lucky One belongs right in the heart of the same category, Sallee's knack for producing bright and smart pop songs that linger long after they've fizzled out as present and captivating as ever.
'Always Looking Back' is indicative of this prowess. A swirling, somewhat more melancholy offering that flickers for over five-minutes, it comes quietly alive in the hovering tenor of her voice, the plaintive nature of the song's disposition, like a furrowed mind caught in absolute balance between what's been and what could be.
Check it out below; the whole album is out now via Western Vinyl.
