099: Blue Lake - Weft
Welcome to the 99th song of our 3/6/5! Hope you're enjoying the run...
Blue Lake, the gorgeous instrumental project of Copenhagen-based Jason Dungan, has announced a new release on the excellent Tonal Union label - home of one of our favourite albums of the year so far in the form of Ezra Feinberg's stunning Soft Power LP.
Titled Weft, the five-song collection is a beautiful melding of instruments and textures, a kind of folky/ambient bonding that makes good on the album's title and associated idea. Inspired by the physical process of ‘weaving’, Dungan brings together a large selection of instruments (acoustic guitars, clarinet, cello, drums, small percussion, keyboard, Roland 606, melodica, piano) to produce a tapestry of sound that feels immediately compelling.
Delightfully charming from its first shuffle of drums, the EP's eponymous opening track is indicative of Dungan's craft - an autumnal instrumental gem that drifts between light and shade, crisp cold and bright warmth in a suitably seasonal manner.
