104: Barry Archie Johnson - I'm Sure I'll See You Soon
It seems a little silly to recommend the fleeting two-minute closing track as the choice pick from Barry Archie Johnson’s exquisite new album - especially when said LP is defined by its long and sprawling instrumental landscapes - but there’s enough magic in these brief glimpses of his work to truly appeal.
The debut LP from the LA via Ohio guitarist/flautist/songwriter, Fortune’s Mirror does indeed single out Johnson as a “startling and gorgeous new voice in guitar centred landscapes.”
It’s closing track, as mentioned, is short and sweet, a gorgeous concoction of guitar and brass that swells and sings to something far greater than itself. What precedes it is equally mesmerising and affecting, blushes of William Tyler and the much-loved Scottish player RM Hubbert producing something meandering and emotive, a wandering flutter of sound and picturesque colour that casts the world in a different glow to the one you found it in.
