169: Annahstasia - Be Kind

It takes a few listens to really get to grips with these new Annahstasia songs, for no other reason than her voice is so special it pulls the focus away from every other aspect of her work. Spend a little time here though and the songs that make up her brand new album brood gently to life; a gripping blend of soul and folk delivered with generous care and attention.
Annahstasia sees the opening track, 'Be Kind' as more of a poem than a song - "a reflection upon the beauty of the mundane and the grandeur of everyday life…a reminder to myself and others to be kind to each other" - but even in its musical form it's a supremely beautiful piece of work. Drifting through five exquisite minutes, its a song of subtle tones and shades, the aching instrumentation hovering just close enough to break through the space afforded by her remarkable voice.
As a scene-setter it's perfect, laying out a gentle path for the songs that follow; a set that includes a wonderful duet with Obongjayar at its heart, among other fascinating moments.
Gently illuminating, the album was a made alongside producers Jason Lader (Frank Ocean), Andrew Lappin (Cassandra Jenkins, L'Rain), and Aaron Liao (Moses Sumney) and features a wide range of accomplished musicians who bring these songs into colourful life. Suffice to say, if there's a better record released all year we'll be in for something truly special. Carve out a little space and give it the time and attention it so richly deserves.
