In the hazy slumber of a Monday morning, Anna Tivel's carefully enunciated new single is the kind of musical hug that eases you into the week, a gentle arm around the shoulder as we step forward into another week of this messy, ugly world that gets a little more of both each day.
The third single from Tivel's forthcoming new album, released on the final day of this month, Disposable Camera is a world within a world thanks to the literary grace of her lyrics, a run of words and details that build a little universe of its own, whether he wisdoms were initially meant for you or not.
before you come into the world, you should know
there are things that will hurt and things that won’t
like scraping your knees on the asphalt
and the freedom right before you fell
...Tivel sings in the track's opening moments, as the sun-dappled guitar adds its own kind of magical, sunrise-hues to the picture. A warm-hearted four-minutes, you could throw a dart at any of the lyrical lines that ripple through the song and come away with some homely, comforting words of advice:
nobody tells it like it is
they say follow the good road and chin up kid
but you learn how to scream when the train comes in
and you feel a weight like you never felt
You'll find halfway through, or...
nobody tells it like it is
they say don’t blow around on a different wind
but you’re gone and you’re not even listening
they were wrong and the wind is a living thing
...as the song rolls towards its nourishing finale.
A singer-songwriter from Portland, Orgeon, the Living Thing LP is Tivel's sixth full-length album and hopefully one that sees her make waves further away from her home state and scene. Listen to all three singles and pre-order it via her Bandcamp page here, and check out Disposable Camera right now, for a hearty dose of invigorating folk-song.
