119: Anna B Savage - Lighthouse
Anna B Savage is a big fan, it seems, of early-year album releases. Her debut album, A Common Turn, was released in January of 2021, its follow-up arrived in February of 2023, and she continues the pattern with You and i are Earth, the forthcoming ten-song set which will greet us into 2025, with a January 24th release.
The latest song to be released from it is the deft, beautifully compelling ballad 'Lighthouse'. Savage's voice is always a thing of wonder, conjuring cinematic scenes whether its slightly skewed and eerie, like we found it on the in|FLUX LP, or a story is gently unravelling through it, such is the way here.
Plaintive and so subtly delivered, 'Lighthouse' is a gorgeous prelude, the softness of the whole piece like a distant voice in a dream, a hark from somewhere calling from somewhere undefined, some shimmering with hope.
"A gentle love song about how I presumed I would end up alone, but found someone who makes me feel held, safe and still a sort of (if you’ll forgive me) independent ship in the night. I tried to keep the production relatively simple like the song, as that’s how the emotion feels also. It’s just nice.”
A wistful wonder of a song; a timely reminder of a singular talent. So this is the new year.
