Admiral Fallow - The Shortest Night (GFP Premiere)
In the time that's passed since they finished making their previous full-length record, Admiral Fallow have experienced new life, new homes, the whole world locking down, as well as the 15th anniversary of their much-loved debut LP. All of the ups and downs, all of the time. All of the noise and gentle silence.
Somewhere, within those times of upheaval and stagnation, the long-running Glasgow band started piecing together what would become First Of The Birds, their fifth full-length album, set for release via Chemikal Underground later this year. Having teased the release with a single earlier this summer, the band have announced full details of the release this week.
Formed of ten new songs, the album grew from small and quiet spaces, Louis Abbott sketching out these new songs as only a new father can – in the gaps between sleep, walking through the park with the early morning birds. While a number of the songs would eventually find noisier paths of their own (the band's line-up remains unchanged from their debut album), the heart of this record remains in the understated spaces where it began – giving the songs an earthy and organic sense of wonder.
Tied to the news of the forthcoming LP, the band have also shared a brand new song and video in the form of 'The Shortest Night', a brooding, punchy four-minutes, steered by a love for The Flaming Lips and Bruce Springsteen, all shifting tones and temperatures, a bold beating heart. The video – which we're premiering below – was made by the excellent multi-disciplinary artist Laura Meek, who leans into the song's undercurrent of yearning; the golden glow from things left behind.
It’s important to celebrate the times we get to enjoy the better days of warmth and sunshine and peace of mind. Escapism if you will, but not in a total denial of reality. A permission to self to escape your mind’s daily routines and dive into the scenes that make you nostalgic and happy. The song, The Shortest Night, is a sunny masterpiece, full of imagination and wonderful musicianship. It has been an absolute honour and joy to conceptualise and create this film.
