A Day in the Life: Why Bonnie

A Day in the Life: Why Bonnie

From the roll of drums and swash of guitar that greets you at the door of Why Bonnie's new album Wish On The Bone, you know you're in safe hands. From their early releases, through 2022's debut album, and now this eleven-song follow-up, Blair Howerton, alongside bandmates Chance Williams and Josh Malett, has carved out some of the most earthy and visceral indie rock of the past few years.

From that fiery and wholehearted title track that opens Wish On The Bone, through its quieter, more affecting moments ('Headlight Sun') this is an album that feels at once both courageous and passionate; a set of songs bound together with the deep-rooted belief that better things are just around the corner.

With the album now out in the world, we asked Blair to walk us through a musical day and throw some recommendations our way. Check it out below.

What's the first song or album you reach for in the quiet morning?

Sittin' by the Road by Blaze Foley is quintessentially Texan and grounds me, in a way. It's just Blaze and his guitar, which makes for a great morning music. Some of the songs are heartfelt and others are funny - both good headspaces to start the day in.

What's the one song you reach for to wake you up and embrace the day ahead?

One Of Your Girls by Troye Sivan. I fit into that category of cis women who lost their absolute minds over this album. It's a mellow and perfectly crafted pop song with a god-tier music video. Troye forever <3

What's your favourite song to accompany you on a road trip?

I talk about If It Makes You Happy by Sheryl Crow in almost every interview because it's truly that important to me. The rhythm is perfect for the highway, and the chorus is best sung at the top of your lungs behind the wheel.

What's an album that sounds best just as the sun begins to go down?

SZA's SOS is the perfect album for that daytime-to-night time transition. I love how smooth yet powerful her voice is, and the instrumentation is chill but exciting enough to get you ready for a night out.

What's your favourite album to dance to when the night arrives?

I mean, it's so hyped up for a reason. I don't feel that way about most things, but I do about Brat by Charlie XCX.

And finally. what's the last song you play in the late-night hush?

Baby Where You Are by Ted Lucas is a soothing love song with that iconic lo-fi 70s treatment. It's dreamy and contemplative. Perfect for a quiet night at home.
