(3/6/5) 004: Amery - Mountain FM

If we think of music as encompassing the whole gamut of human emotion, then it's epicentre – it's beating heart, if you will – can be found directly between pleasure and pain, sorrow and elation.

Dig into that core and you'll find the sweet pop music of Amery Sandford. A Canadian songwriter who has previously performed as Alpen Glow, and also played in various punk bands over the years, Amery has just announced their debut record under her own name, set to be released later this summer via the excellent Glasgow label Night School Records.

'Mountain FM', the bright and wistful lead single – and album's opening track – takes its name from the radio station in Amery's hometown in the mountains of Alberta, and carries a suitable sense of nostalgia across its giddy three-minutes. Led by a bubbling undercurrent of synths, Amery's voice is quietly invigorating, a gentle pull from an early morning slumber into something far more adventurous.

The forthcoming album, which was recorded in Montreal by David Carriere (TOPS), features a full live band, and Sarah Harris, Jack Bielli, and Frank Climenhage, combine to swell 'Mountain FM' into a quivering track that brims with the deep-seated ache of boundary and escape.

Described by Night School founder Michael Kasparis as "eight fully fledged bangers on the cusp of sadness and joy" – the full album is released on May 31st and you can check out the 'Mountain FM' video below.
