151: Will Fox - Sad Song

Due to the ever-relentless rush of time itself, it's somehow been three years since the last full-length Will Fox record. I still listen to Old News plenty, the subtle nature of Will's craft, of his plaintive and earthy song-writing still revealing new shades with each passing season.
That being said, we're now on the cusp of a whole new record, with Metal in the Microwave arriving in just a couple of weeks. Will's unveiled a number of songs from the track over the past couple of months, and the album's final single 'Sad Song' has just arrived.
Somewhat dreamy, and beautifully created as always, 'Sad Song' is a gem of track. All honey-toned and bright-eyed, the song crams numerous ideas and tones into just three-minutes, the jam-like nature of it all finally bursting into life for its final throes; the song blooming in full colour just as it departs.
As far as reference points go, Will's sound has always been hard to pin down but I stumbled upon a comment on his Instagram post that described him as Elliott Smith meets Tame Impala and I guess there might be something in that. Colourful, textured, sonically interesting and always hovering on the edge of somewhere melancholy, it makes for something uniquely special.
Roll on the new album; it's released April 18th.
