144: Goddess - Shadows

A brand new project, formed and led by Savages' Fay Milton, Goddess release a debut album at the end of May. Preceding it comes a bold debut single, carrying the album's context in its glistening hands.
Formed of 10 new songs, the album pulls together a host of female/non-binary collaborators on each and every song. Here, on 'Shadows', it's Ex:Re/Daughter's Elena Tonra alongside Hinako Omori on piano and Ayse Hassan (Savages) on bass – elsewhere it's Bess Atwell, Shingai (The Noisettes), Delilah Holliday (Skinny Girl Diet) and many more.
“Around the time that Savages went on hiatus, I started thinking about the climate crisis and realising how existential it is,” Fay says of her new project. “I couldn't really justify being someone who continues to jump on a plane every day. I realised that if you're not planning to tour, that's a creative parameter that opens up a lot of freedom. You can have a different singer on every track and bring in instruments like harp and strings.”
Pitched as a kind of Desert Sessions-style undertaking, the album flips between tones and genres at will, each collaborator both being led but also leading to create their own unique shape. 'Shadows' is the first offering and it's as beautiful and brooding as we've come to expect from Elena, that torch-lit voice as evocative and moving as ever.
“What I love about this track is that it's got this darkness and lightness at the same time,” Fay comments. “It's got this real thunder and lightning energy. There’s a sparkly piano, very light and delicate, and then this noise bass that runs through it. Elena’s vocal is just completely exquisite, as well as her lyrics.”
Infinitely intriguing, sure to be inventive, the full album arrives May 30th on Bella Union. Check out 'Shadows' right now for a taste of things to come.
