078: Ariella - Now

Check out the genre descriptors at the bottom of Ariella's Bandcamp page and you'll find, among others, 'soft rock' 'folk punk' and 'desert rock'. While such labels might seem somewhat superfluous, the three songs released from her forthcoming debut album do indeed cover such shifting terrain, flipping between quiet retreat and moments of expansive, far heavier unloading.

While previous singles 'Blindsided' and 'Ready' have both left a mark, new track 'Now' might well be the pick of the bunch so far; an emotive and emphatic document of struggle that feels like an epic ballad despite being wrapped up within two-and-a-half minutes.

Ariella's conveys the song's scarred heart proudly, the sense of unrest and desperation a palpable, ever-present looming figure, while the music, which initially lingers relatively unnoticed suddenly swells into a surprising and oddly-shaped beast of its own.

Both fevered and fertile, it's a gem of a track that further whets the appetite for the forthcoming record; an eleven-song collection called CryBaby that arrives October 11, via the brilliant Lauren Records.

I wrote "Now" to express the heartache of breaking up with someone you still deeply love and the struggle to move forward despite those lingering feelings. It's important to me because it captures the painful yet relatable journey of desperately trying to move forward when your heart is still tied to the past. I hope it resonates with anyone who has struggled with the echoes of a past relationship and is seeking solace in their own process of recovery.
